Many of us use laser and ink-jet printers at home. This is what is commonly known as digital printing. Its sending an image directly to the printer via digital files such as PDFs and those from graphics software such as Illustrator and InDesign. This eliminates the need for a printing plate, which is used in offset printing, which can save money and time. Since we don’t need to create a plate, we can provide a faster turnaround and deliver printing on demand. Rather than printing large, pre-determined runs, we can print a job of fewer prints, or even just one. Typically, offset printing results in slightly better quality prints, but digital methods are continually improving in quality and cost.
The offset printing technique transfers (or “offsets”) an inked image onto a metal plate, then transfers that image to an intermediary surface such as a rubber blanket, and gets applied to paper by pressing the paper against the intermediary surface. Offset printing can produce large volumes of high-quality documents.
